Bachelor thesis project: How interface design influences word suggestion usage on mobile phones

Description:

Word suggestions are commonly used when people type on mobile devices. However, the way these suggestions are visually presented — such as being placed above the keyboard (as in the example above) or within the input area — may strongly influence how users perceive and interact with them. Even subtle interface changes can alter users’ gaze behavior, cognitive load, and decision-making during typing with word suggestions.

The goal of this thesis is to explore how interface layout, specifically suggestion placement, affects users’ reliance on and interaction with word suggestions during text input on mobile devices. The work will involve designing and implementing alternative typing interfaces (e.g., with suggestions in different positions or styles), conducting user studies, and analyzing the collected data to understand the underlying cognitive and behavioral mechanisms.

Requirements:

  • Very good programming skills (Web-based, Python)
  • Experience or strong interest in conducting empirical user studies and data analysis
